Quake M6.5 NZ volcanic zone

Geonet NZ seismograph

July 5, 2011
Just 30kms west of Taupo, central North Island New Zealand in a central volcanic zone, 150kms deep but shake reports are widespread, but no reports of damage so far.

This marks a recent uptick in seismic activity - but away from the Canterbury-Christchurch zone plagued by quakes since Sept 4 2010, which is likely to have been activated in the wake of the recent total solar eclipse in Cancer (July 1)

Recent significant activity in the Porangahau area has occurred in the North Island. (this link may expire within one week)

This diverse seismic unrest is of particular concern for the international rating of New Zealand for insurance purposes.  My recent post No Assurance follows this topic, in  the light of problems arising for many affected by earthquakes in Christchurch.
